Catherine Opie

Catherine Opie es una fotógrafa estadounidense (nacida en 1961 en Sandusky, Ohio, vive en Los Ángeles, California) especializada en temas de fotografía documental. A través de su trabajo ha investigado aspectos de comunidad, haciendo retratos de algunos grupos, como las comunidades LGBT, surfistas y, más recientemente, jugadores de futbol americano. Está interesada en cómo las identidades son formadas por la arquitectura circundante.

Biografía

Se formó en el San Francisco Art Institute y luego, MBA, en el California Institute of the Arts School of Art (CalArts) de Valencia, California (1988).

Alcanzó la fama a mediados de los noventa, con una serie de retratos de la sociedad underground californiana: travestís, transexuales, drag queens, tatuadores ... que capturaba en imágenes de gran elegancia, llenas de color, y en las que los modelos miraban a la cámara directamente. También es autora de numerosos autorretratos en los que juega el papel de distintos alter egos.

Dio clases de arte y fotografía en la Universidad de Yale y actualmente es profesora de fotografía en la University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

Ha obtenido, entre otros,  los siguientes galardones:

• 1997 Citibank Private Bank Emerging Artist Award,
• 1999 Washington University Freund Fellowship,
• 2003 CalArts Alpert Award in the Arts,
• 2004 Larry Aldrich Award, San Francisco Art Institute President's Award for Excellence,
• 2006 United States Artist Fellowship.

Su primera exposición individual tuvo lugar en 1989 en el Mills College de Oakland, y sus más recientes exposiciones han sido:
